As an international player what will stop us is border closures/flights. If we cannot physically make it down to MB due to this would we be covered to get an refunded or deferred entry fee?
May 9, 2020 at 10:09 am #47254Ed GuertinParticipantInteresting comments here!
Myself, I have played in 7-8 World AM’s now and I have entered again this year and I also entered 2 of the skins games pre-tourney. Along with that I have already rented a condo so I’m ready for a great time even if it is a little different than prior years.
I have never won anything in any of the drawings but I still entered early just to be eligible for the May drawing. So, I look at it this way, if I buy raffle tickets for an outside drawing and I don’t win, I don’t expect my money back.
Myself, I take the same position here, if they have the drawing and I don’t win anything and down the road the tourney is cancelled, I won’t be whining if I don’t get 100% reimbursement, that’s just me….May 9, 2020 at 10:09 am #47255Ed GuertinParticipantInteresting comments here!

I registered the first day and also paid for my father and grandson who reside in Australia but its looking like they wont be coming due to the restrictions, so….. from my understanding if I request a refund prior to August 1st I will lose $50 per person. $100 is a small price to pay to know that they are safe and secure in Australia and then again there is always the 2021 WAM in which they can come over and visit
May 9, 2020 at 2:19 pm #47257Tommy BriggsBlockedHarry I would give it a little more time and see what Scott comes up with. I am sure as we get nearer there will be some rules and options presented for people who cannot make it and using your father and grandson’s entry fee for next year might be an option that would save you a few dollars.
May 9, 2020 at 4:41 pm #47258Bob NewmanParticipantI am planning on registering befoethe deadline (is May14 correct?) but I would like to know as to what will br happening, or the different scenarios that might happen. I think we should expect this at the very least before plunking down our $$. I honestly don’t think it will be cancelled, but I’m Leary that some modifications will happen.
May 9, 2020 at 7:28 pm #47259Tommy BriggsBlockedBob, I do not understand how anyone can expect Scott to tell us what, (if any) affect the virus will have on us in three plus months. Without that information how can anyone tell us what modifications or changes, (if any) the World Am see?
Will Covid19 even exist in one-hundred days?
Will things be back to normal in three months? Will it be worse? Will the virus be completely eliminated only to have a hurricane land the week of the tournament.
Scott and his staff need to prepare a tournament and will need to make numerous commitments to accommodate those who play.
If you believe Scott and his staff have always done right by us then we should trust him to do right by us this time.May 9, 2020 at 9:21 pm #47260Bob NewmanParticipantTommy, I bet you that the WA is preparing different scenarios as to what may happen if such and such happens. It’s called the “Seven P’S” or Proper Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance. No one knows for certain what is going to happen. My place for vacation in July has not requested full payment yet which is highly unusual for them. I personally think all this has been blown up more than it should here in SC. I carry a mask with me just in case I get in a place where I don’t feel safe, but have only been in 1 situation where I actually put in on other than going for a doctors appointment. I’m actually more concerned that the 18 courses that went wall to wall “overseeding” will not be ready for summer play. I just want them to share some of there thoughts as to “WHAT IF this happens”
May 9, 2020 at 9:59 pm #47261Rick KimbrellParticipantI have played in the last 32 consecutive World Am events and I registered the first day we could for my 33 one. I hope we get to play, I hope the Convention Center is open, and I hope to see all my friends I have made in prior years. Hotel has been booked for months. I booked my airline tonight. I can’t remember ever seeing $122 round trip airfare to South Carolina. I jumped on it. We even debated driving this year but at that price for airfare…just could not pass it up. Still have to book a rent car but that can be done right up to last day before I leave.
Oh…and FWIW…I do trust Scott and crew to do whatever they can to make this event happen.
For now…all of you stay safe and play a lot of golf.May 10, 2020 at 7:38 am #47262Tommy BriggsBlockedBob I have absolutely no doubt Scott and his staff have discussed numerous possibilities to conduct the tournament under every possible scenario.
I also think he would be an absolute fool to post them in public.
The minute he does, someone will focus on one absurd possibility and run with it and next thing you know we have some one running around telling everyone he knows, “The world Am is going to be played in Puerto Rico this year to avoid the virus”, or writing to the staff, “I want my money back if we have to wear masks at the 19th hole”.
We have over three months before the tournament, lets see how all of this plays out and I am very confident Scott will give us good information at the proper time. For those who fear the worst, it will only cost them $50.00 to wait and see. But to start publicly discussing events in late August / Sept in the middle of May is incredulous.
By the way if I owned a golf course I absolutely would have over seeded and aeriated and performed any other major or minor work on my course when this all broke out, knowing travel would be limited and “vacations” would be dramatically reduced. I also have never seen a course that was not playable after over seeding or aeriation within 4 – 5 weeks.
May 10, 2020 at 8:20 am #47263Bob NewmanParticipantTommy. I have no doubt that everything will be fine but I do have some reservations as to what the “scene will look like. I also do not really care if I lose the $50 or not. In fact, if I take another blow to my shoulder like I did last week, I may have to withdraw due to that. But, if I am signing up for one thing and then I get a different version of what I signed up for, then that is a different story. I am not saying I do not trust anyone with the WA to make a decision. They are actually having to deal with a lot more than we are. I am planning on coming down and playing as always, I was just asking for some more information.
As for the overseeding, some of your mid tier courses will probably have some issues transitioning to Bermuda fairways especially since we are having a cool spring and the Rye will not want to die out. The courses that did not have full growth of fairways last year and overseeded, will not have full growth for this summer. I was not upset last year when a couple courses I played were not up to what I expected due to the winter but I do expect better this year. By the by, I did speak with several Greens Supertentants in my area, and all of them do not overseed any longer. JMOMay 10, 2020 at 9:41 am #47264Aaron EllisParticipantOl Bob!
You are silly to think the courses won’t be in good shape with the overseeding down there, I was down there last week and will be down there this week, only due to the overseeding! Here in Charlotte with the cooler temps the Bermuda isn’t even growing, so it’s actually a good thing they have rye, and the rye will burn out quick once the true heat hits it and the Bermuda will flourish! If they didn’t have rye down you’d have the same problem we are having with the Bermuda that is growing in Charlotte and the over play from normal, the young Bermuda is getting beat down by all the carts driving on it non stop and the cooler weather and nights isn’t letting it grow, so the areas that didn’t overseed will actually have the worst of this if they are getting played on a regular basis! Come to Charlotte and you’ll see what I mean, I’m not even looking forward to summer here and potentially having bare patches from where the grass couldn’t grow from all the carts beating it down to soon! You’ll be thankful come Aug, the cool spring is helping!
May 10, 2020 at 10:26 am #47265Chad WatsonParticipantI like others are considering whether or not to enter into the unknown. I know the tourney draws players from hot spot areas and then some from areas not so seriously effected. Are there plans to be one cart per person, any kind of testing done if it’s still an issue, is the 19th hole still going to be open due to distancing and number of people issues, exchanging scorecards? Just so many unanswered questions that the committee would have to be visionaries to answer all of them. I guess what most of us are after is if we enter and stipulations are added or things become limited will the option be offered to pull out with a full refund or will compensations be made to recoop what may not be available at this tourney versus one’s in years past?
May 10, 2020 at 1:50 pm #47266Tommy BriggsBlockedI am not Scott but I do not think the World Am knows what the tourney will look like in August. I would bet they as of today they are planning on running the same tourney they have for years and years. As August gets closer they will look at what changes become necessary. I can tell you from organizing tourneys on a smaller scale the first time you allow conditional withdrawals you have someone that says they want to cancel because last year we had twelve beer stands and this year we only have eleven, last year we had three different shirt colors offered and this year we only have two.
I started a thread asking if the 19th hole was a deal breaker because for me I could really care less about the 19th hole, but it appears to some it is the highlight of the tourney. I think if anyone expects there to be no changes at all, they will be disappointed, I am sure there will be some minor changes at the very least if for no other reason because there will be a difference in the attitude of the golfers.
The bottom line is it will cost you $50.00 to take a chance the World Am will pull off something that makes the majority happy. Or you can play it safe and wait until we get closer to August and more details are available. Hey look at the bright side, normally we would have major bitching about handicaps, adjustments and penalties, so we have avoided that crap so far.
May 10, 2020 at 2:53 pm #47267Bob NewmanParticipantAaron, I honestly think it was good for the MB area to overseed as Spring is Prime time for them. i use to come and play MB in the spring a lot. There is nothing more beautiful than a golf course full of rye. Just look at Augusta National, but come June 10ish, Augusta National shuts down for the summer and does not reopen until early October. About 12 years ago I started attending meeting with the CGA in Pinehurst and the first thing i took from those meeting was their agronomist was preaching to stop overseeding and be brown thru the winter months. In fact, the first course I got to play in PH was the Country Club of N C and was i so disappointed that it was not overseeded. It still a pleasure to play it. This train of thought took a couple years to work it way into SC and most in SC will now tell you it is best way to go. But MB is a different case and I think it is best for them, but I do think those 18 courses will have some issues and I hope i do not draw them for the WA.
Where do you play in the Charlotte area? My daughters family now lives in Fort Mill and I have played several courses up that way. Have not been up to play that much last year but plan on playing more this year. If you have not ventured down near Lancaster to play Edge Water. it is well worth the trip. - AuthorPosts
