Does the committee not have a say in the WA index we play at? My HI right now is 8.2. My WA index is 10.7. However, I’ve been given a 4.5 for the WA tournament. How does that work? I even spoke to Patrick with the WA on the phone and he said my GHIN index was 4.5 in this fiscal year and that’s what they go by. That was September of last year. I’ll be playing in what may be the 2nd flight and I was in the 4th last year playing with a higher index. This makes no sense at all. Is anyone else having this problem?
August 14, 2023 at 1:50 pm #51946John TantilloParticipantIt’s not a problem at all, sounds like the handicap is being assigned as is described in the rules. We all play with the lowest of 3 numbers–our WA index, our current index, or our 12-month low. Sounds like your 12-mo low is 4.5. I’m using my 12-mo low and I would guess that 90% of participants are as well, so almost everyone around you will have a similar difference between that number and current index. BTW most major tournaments and competitions use 12-mo low now because it prevents players from “playing up” their handicap before an event, and it is really a measure of your true potential.

While I understand the “sandbagging” aspect of it, Patrick even told me he didn’t understand either because my best round is 81/76. I’m not one of those guys. We’re playing for a $600 gift card in the grand scheme. I just want to be playing in the right group. Can I shoot mid 70s? Sure but to have to do it 4 straight days is asking a lot. Better make more putts I guess.
August 14, 2023 at 9:42 pm #51955Billy BurwickParticipantJohn,
I feel your pain, My low is 23 from last sept after the world am and yet I am now 4 strokes higher having not broken 90 all year but will still have to play at the 23. The thought I have sandbagged all year to have a shot at a $600 gift card is laughable. There were times I wanted to quit. Yeah that bad.
YET
I say all this While Excitedly waiting 10 more days so I can see some of the friends I made last year during year #1.
If I have to play as a 23 instead of 27 so be it. It really doesn’t matter I am not going to Myrtle with any thoughts I might win my flight I would just like to improve on last years finish and have as much fun as I did last year.August 15, 2023 at 9:21 pm #51968JOHN HERNDONParticipantI hear ya Billy. The weird part is my WA index is almost 11 but I’m playing at a 4.5 this year. The proof is in the previous scores and I’m still playing low. You still have to hit the shots and make the putts. Either way, my best friend I are coming down to enjoy a skins game on Sunday at my favorite track down there(Caledonia) and have lots of laughs and memories to keep going.
August 16, 2023 at 12:36 pm #51982William Aleshire Jr.ParticipantI believe the WA index is only used to reduce(Lower) you HC not increase(Raise) it.
My HC is 10.6 / LHC 10.6 / WA 14.0 so I will be playing at a 10.6.
August 16, 2023 at 3:05 pm #51993Bill HambrickParticipantJohn they don’t use your last year H I, but low handicap for the previous 12 months
August 18, 2023 at 8:08 am #52022Ricky LawsonParticipant@JohnHerndon……I will see you at Caledonia on Sunday. I played Caledonia for last years WAm. Great course. I was wondering if you could answer a question or two for me….this is the first year I have played a Skins event prior to the WA…..other than the optional Low Net/Low Gross entry, our Skins $$ is already paid by our registration correct? Second question, since this Skins event includes players from all handicaps….are skins determined by gross or net birdie or better or are they broken up into different flights?
August 18, 2023 at 8:11 am #52023JOHN HERNDONParticipantI’m not 100% sure but it looks like there’s another $10 to be thrown in for something. I don’t know if they’re handicapping the skins game on Sunday or not. Maybe someone else could give more clarification?
August 18, 2023 at 8:13 am #52024Ricky LawsonParticipantAppreciate the reply. See you at Caledonia.
August 18, 2023 at 8:27 am #52025Darren YowellParticipantI am playing Caledonia too. The $ 85 is to play…will be $10 gross and $10 net skin options
I was lucky enough to to win 2 skins last year…
My HC is 9.6…WA index in 12 and low is 8.6…so I am 8.6
All good
See yall thereAugust 18, 2023 at 8:46 am #52026Ricky LawsonParticipantNow I feel really dumb…..LOL. So the $85 is just to play the course and to win any skins $$$ you have to pay the extra $10 for gross and or $10 for net? I am a HC 16.4 with a low HC of 14.9. Not sure what my WA indies is. Thanks for reply Darren and see you at Caledonia.
