It seems that the skin game becomes a topic before flights are even decided. I have run a skin game every year I’ve been fortunate to play, since 1997. It is intriguing that someone who may a run a game the year before and is reflighted takes it upon themsellf to run a skin game regardless of the fact that someone else in that flight ran it the year before. Don’t know how this all gets decided but it sure starts earlier every year. I’m pretty sure I will be reflighted, been playing pretty poorly for some time, but if I move to a flight someone else ran it last year and returns this year, he should get first crack at running it. If he decides not to then I would volunteer to fo it. Just not sure how some feel they can stake out the skin game a month and a half before the tournament.

Hey, David….can you tell me which flight I am in? Maybe those other guys already have the assignments? LOL 🙂

I think people need to relax and wait for the WA to get closer and flights to get finalized before they get their knickers in a bundle. Personally after 45 years of club membership and running every variety of tournament, skin game and club operations, I have always been happy when someone wants to step up and run anything. I wasn’t aware that anyone other than WA staff had any type of ownership, and anyone who wants to be responsible for managing the side skins has my heartfelt gratitude. So getting upset about a possible competition on managing the skins seems kind of silly to me. If someone steps up to volunteer my flight…Thank You! If it gets a week or so out and I don’t see anyone volunteering, then I’d toss my hat in the ring, but I’m certainly not offended if someone else takes responsibility. Just my 2c.

    BTW – I can’t wait. 🙂

David, i hope your blog isn’t because of my blog. I’ve run a skins game for all the 11 years i’ve been entered and no one has ever been upset when i step forward and run a game. I was trying to let everyone know in my old flights that i was ready to run it again. If the comments i received each year about running the game where everyone was looking forward to my returning and rerunning next year sparked me to write the blog. I was hoping to get a few positive comments from the participants that have been in any of the games i’ve run just to get reacquainted. I hope you get to run a game in your flight, you have never been in any of my flights and played in or i would recognize your name, so good luck in the tourney and i hope you have as much fun as I do meeting everyone in your game.

Dale Craig, I totally agree with you. I have ran the skins game in my flight(s) the last couple of years. I volunteered only because no one else volunteered to do it and I said I would only do so if I got some help. I got great help both years. Both years, the decision was made the morning of the Monday first round of the tournament…not before.
I came better prepared to do it last year than I did the year before. Last year I had printouts and such to make it a lot easier. I will do the same this year but believe me, if someone else steps up to run it…he will not get any argument out of me. I will gladly help as much as I can. But, if no one offers to do it, I will volunteer again this year. I never come “expecting” to be the skins game guy in my flight but always glad to do it if no one else does.

from the point of someone that does not like to play in the skins and will not play in them to the persons that run the games in my flight–PLEASE, if I do not seek you out, do not ask me if I want in and once I tell you NO, please do not continue to ask me each day. ALSO, the pros are busy enough getting the rules of competition clear to the players and do not have time to announce that the skins guy is over there. This is actually a Golf tournament.

Bob, if you are in my flight, which I doubt, if you aren’t interested in playing why would anyone want you to? I don’t believe in all the years I have run a skin game, all the way back to 97, I have yet to have any issue with the Pro giving instructions or interfered in any way. Not sure who has been running the skin game in your flight. I only want golfers who want to play, so definitely wouldn’t ask once you said you were interested. Do you have golfers in your flight get confused, or not sure, they are playing in a golf tournament? Very interesting comment. My point was, it seems that people are staking a claim to run the skin game in some flight before they have any certainty of what flight they are in. To Dales comment it is definitely good thing when people agree to run a game. Last year there were some flights that didn’t have someone step up. I am sure it will all work and every one will have a good time.

David, I agree with you about staking a claim to the skins this early–why??? I have had the unfortunate experience the last 3 years of being asked by the same person if I want in. I finally got him to understand I didnot want in I could care less what goes on with the skins, but I feel it should be on the side and while the pro is attempting to get us on the course, he should not be making an announcement to see the skins guy if you want in. Strange that the skins guy seeks people out. I have never had time to do that. Once I agree to do it, if people want in…they come looking for me. The pro(s) is generally nice enough, at least has been my experience, to make an announcement of who I am and where I can be found. I do not have time to go chase people down. I also collect for all days up front if people are willing to pay that way. If not, they are marked as single day and they have to find me every day they want in. Running skins is not rocket science but it is a lot of work. And, as stated, the only way I will do it is if I have some help. I tell everyone up front…I do not take a cut. I pay out everything I take in even to the point where I have ended up mailing a guy his check from the last day after the tournament was over. I do not ask for tips. If I get one…great. If a winner buys me a drink…great. If not…so be it. And , if I am not running it and I win a big skin, I will give the guy running it a tip. If it is something small, I will definitely buy him a drink.
