If we have 36 people per flight, with 3 somes then you will need 12 tee-times but with 4 somes you will only need 9 tee-times. I do not think 3 somes speed up play everyone has to finish.
July 12, 2020 at 6:16 pm #47602Bob NewmanParticipantBill, then why does pro events use 3’ the first 2 days of an event. They did the research. Even with double tees it is the fastest way to get them around the course. It is also easier to determine who is showing the group down. But that’sa different issue with how you get the local pro to go out and monitor pace of play (we discussed that issue long and hard on here in the past)
July 12, 2020 at 6:25 pm #47604Tommy BriggsBlockedBill threesomes absolutely are faster than foursomes. As Bob said there is a reason why the pros use threesomes and almost any amateur tournament uses threesomes.
July 12, 2020 at 6:44 pm #47605Jim KavanaghParticipantThe USGA says that a 4some will take about one minute longer per hole than a 3some. That will save 18 minutes per round using 3somes.
July 12, 2020 at 10:19 pm #47607Bob NewmanParticipantYou are eliminating on average one person making 4 shots per hole. Just to play the shoot he gets 40 seconds plus the time he discusses everything with his caddie about the shot. Having caddies in most of the events I volunteer at figure a caddie adds 35 minutes to the round. I just finished an event where they used the same tee times and hole time as he the past. We struggled in the past to get them around in the time allotted. This year, with no caddies, they finished in 30 minutes under time par. The field consisted of some of the best Amateurs on the southeast on a course that has very demanding greens. I have seen the 3 some work and I had some of the fastest rounds on the WA using them. July 12, 2020 at 11:03 pm #47608Rick KimbrellParticipantYou are correct Bob. When the WA had us playing 3somes before, it definitely was the fastest rounds I have every played in the WA.
July 13, 2020 at 7:49 am #47610Scott T. – World AmKeymasterThreesomes a few years back when we tried were better pace but not nearly what it could be when we are in single rider this year. Plus we have the entire morning reserved for our group so why not space out the tee times and create more social distancing?
July 13, 2020 at 9:08 am #47613Bill HambrickParticipantThis is all going to be fine, unless we get Cart Path Only and in the higher handicap flt’s it will be really slow
July 13, 2020 at 10:25 am #47614Lee HooperParticipantBack in 2017 after two days of cart path only, we played ( last day ) Sea Trails Plantation – Jones Course – and they let us play handicap golf for everyone. You could go almost on the tee boxes and to within a few yards of the greens and you talk about a fast round and this being in the last flight ( # 45 ) of the Mid Senior group. If you want to speed things up, this would be something to consider.
July 13, 2020 at 11:05 am #47615Bob NewmanParticipantI would not be in favor of this because I have seen a lot of golfers taking carts where they can damage the golf course. It’s going to be a swift round with thrones and 1 to a cart. I still hope that piece of play is monitored.
July 14, 2020 at 4:21 pm #47626Bill HambrickParticipantYes Lee I remember that, we did get around fairly quickly that day.
July 21, 2020 at 10:31 am #47668Mark HancockParticipantScott: I just read the new safety update and I congratulate you and the team for your efforts. Playing in threesomes will greatly improve pace of play and having tee times will eliminate having multiple foursome starting on the same hole with a shotgun start. Outstanding.
July 21, 2020 at 2:34 pm #47669greg carpenterParticipantFaster pace playing a round ..
July 21, 2020 at 5:07 pm #47674Mike SigmonParticipantI’m going to have to say I agree with Mark above, My hat is off to the outstanding job that Scott and the world AM crew has done in order to get this show on the road….And i to am 100% in favor of playing threesomes this year…
July 22, 2020 at 10:47 am #47680Denny BurchParticipantThe pace of play should be better no matter whether we play threesomes or foursomes, mainly due to the single rider setup. I actually prefer the foursome shotgun start for the convenience to the person running skins games and the people who play in them. Remember that there will only be 72 players on the course, meaning with foursomes there would only be one group per tee in a shotgun. So, all groups are spread out at least 15 mins apart, a larger spread than tee times.
One advantage for tee times is that the range should not be as crowded, especially with only 72 players, but overall I prefer the shotgun, especially with the low player count.
