Player Profile: World Am Reconnects Calvin Cross with Old Friends
By: Rick Limpert for WorldAmGolf.com
If you ask the participants to rank in order the reasons they come to Myrtle Beach each year to play in and experience the sights, sounds and scope of the World Am, you will find out that "golf" isn't usually at the top of list.
Calvin Cross likes to think he is the typical golfer that plays in the World Am and while he loves the sport, this event gives him an excuse to hang out with friends and other like-minded individuals in a relaxed setting.
Cross spends his evenings this week at the 19th Hole exchanging stories with his friends and golfing buddies.
Hometown: Newington, CT
Experience: Second year
Handicap: Was a 15 now a 20
What's great about this event?
I played very well last year. It's the excitement and I get to see my old friends that I haven't seen and meet new people. I haven't seen my friend standing here in almost 20 years. We just reconnected through the golf.
Is this an event you take serious, or are you out to have fun?
Just like the next guy, I want to play well, but it's all about having fun.
Where did you play on Monday?
I played Waterway Hills the first day and I found a lot of water. We played the championship tees and it was a good test. A few of us are thinking, is this the way it's going to be the entire week?
What is your occupation and how long have you been playing golf?
I've been a diesel mechanic for 27 years. Been playing golf for 10 years. It gets me out of the house. Wherever I go I just love to play the game. This week, I think I can win it.
