Just curious to know if anyone had any thoughts on live scoring. I’ve played in the Mesquite AM, and other tournaments where they utilized the Golf Genius App…or other Apps to accomodate live scoring.
I don’t know what goes into making that happen…and we all understand that it’s not official, until it’s official. Any friends and family that are not playing, and want to keep up with our status. Or any of us golfers that like to “scoreboard” watch. I think it would go a long way to making WA a little more intriguing…if not another way to keep up with how our buddies may be doing at any particular time.
Just a thought.

On a different thought, if we are checking up on our buddies, how much is that going to slow down play in a tournament that is already plagued by slow play?July 21, 2022 at 11:31 am #50875Tony RobisonParticipantWe use golf genius in all our local CGA events. It has no effect on pace of play. You enter scores in about 5 seconds and can swipe to leaderboards just as quickly. Since you’re waiting on every tee, you’d have time to look at every flight if you wanted to. Hell, it’s actually speeds up scorekeeping since it adds up the score, which some players have a problem with

July 22, 2022 at 11:18 am #50878Scott T. – World AmKeymasterWe have the capability to do live scoring with our App. We attempted it a few years back. Long story short when only 5% of the tournament is using it we felt it was doing more harm than good. The underlying factor is in a handicapped event scoreboard watching leads to manipulation. I won’t pretend that does not exist and I (personally) rather people just try to play their best at all times. If we ever get to a point where nearly 100% are onboarded it could be done, I just am not sure when that may be.
July 23, 2022 at 12:49 am #50882Billy JohnsonParticipantI don’t recall the live scoring ever being part of the WA. If it was, I never knew it was in place. I’d venture a guess that the 5% that was privy to it, were the only ones that knew about it. I never saw any mention about it.
I personally don’t think it takes away from any competative balance in the WA. I’m only suggesting that maybe the live scoring allows for others (family and friends that are not competing) to keep track while each round is going on. If you are promoting this event as “similar’ to a PGA event. Then why not have live scoring to keep track of what’s going on?
July 23, 2022 at 5:16 am #50883Billy BurwickParticipantI’m not arguing either way But it just requires 1 person in each 4 some to enter scores each hole.
Sure maybe some people might try to manipulate it but knowing where I was had no bearing on this 25’s play.
July 23, 2022 at 6:15 am #50884Bruce FriendParticipantI recall it. I think it was 2019. I believe it was ser up for each individual versus assigning 1 person per group to keep it as it is for other tournaments I play in.
I don’t care about live scoring as I don’t believe it will be accurate enough to be worthwhile during the round for 3000 people. Being inaccurate is worse than none at all imo. I do like the app and it being updated nightly with posted scores.
July 23, 2022 at 10:52 am #50886Rick KimbrellParticipantAt my club, Golf Genius is used for twice weekly Senior Men’s play day(s). Being able to see other people’s scores definitely has been some concern because of score manipulation. Blocking other players from seeing scores for holes 15, 16, 16 and 18 has helped but then we don’t do shotgun start. And, remember, we are all seniors. Not every senior is tech savvy and screwing up scoring in Golf Genius is very common. We require a scorecard to back up what is in Golf Genius. I have seen guys sitting under a tree just off 18 green for 10 or 15 minutes trying to resolve scoring discrepancies between GG and the physical scorecard and the scores in GG are changing the entire time they are out there. And, we are talking around 60 players, not double that.

August 4, 2022 at 5:29 pm #50961Christopher SmithParticipanti play in the Golfweek amateur’s tour, and we have 120 people at the course each tournament. We use live scoring and that is easy to do with one of the 4 people in the group taking charge of it. We don’t have any issues with using live scoring and it is considered the official scoring system.
August 5, 2022 at 9:29 am #50966Chad WilsonParticipantLive scoring for 3,000 golfers would be a disaster lol
Who wants to sit on their phone for 5 hours? No thanks. All it takes is 2 or 3 groups in a flight not keeping score for a round for wahtever reason and now a third of a flight isn’t on the leaderboard.
August 5, 2022 at 9:36 am #50967Scott PorterParticipantA few years back on the finale day live scoring was used. The person in our group flipped my score and one of the other players on 2 holes and only during the score card review did we catch it. Live scoring is fine for looking at during the round if you feel you need to know where you are but it cannot take the place of a scorecard.
August 5, 2022 at 9:40 am #50968Rick KimbrellParticipantChad and Scott, you are both so so correct.
August 5, 2022 at 1:24 pm #50972Tony RobisonParticipantThe only issue is that there are still so many that can’t figure out how to enter the GGID or how to navigate the app. We use it during CGA events and then turn in scorecards to verify. If there is no issue then the eletronic scoring is posted. It’s a lot better than waiting until 6:30 at the convention center and looking for your scores
August 5, 2022 at 2:18 pm #50974Bruce FriendParticipantDownload the app. The staff will have them posted usually before the 19th hole.
