Does anyone know why the World Am is now limiting the total field participation to 3,000 players?
April 1, 2025 at 9:04 am #53435Chandler WellsParticipantProbably lost a few courses…Grumbles last year about the $$$ some courses were losing because of the World Am cutting their regular play for more money.
April 7, 2025 at 2:37 pm #53462Bob NewmanParticipantAll they have been averaging for probably 8 years is 3200, so not cutting it much. They would get about 2,ooo on early sign up and the 1000 from there to the end.
April 8, 2025 at 4:26 pm #53465Tom McCainParticipantLess than 3K last year.
April 8, 2025 at 7:36 pm #53468Bob NewmanParticipantI thought they reached the 3000 when they added some almost the last day. Either way I think that this is about where they can handle everything efficiently.
April 9, 2025 at 9:33 am #53469Keith StephensParticipantI personally think the 3000 limit is more of a marketing tool than anything else. First, when you put a limit on availability, it creates an artificial sense of urgency to register for or to purchase an item. Think about late night TV infomercials that urge you to purchase NOW……better hurry…only 5 left at this price….don’t miss out……if you buy now, you’ll also receive a set of Ginsu knives….blah, blah, blah……all of this is Marketing 101. Second, from a PR perspective, it looks good if the World Am Team can announce that the 2025 Myrtle Beach World Am has SOLD OUT! I know they have done that when they’ve had a “sellout” in some of the other field limited events they host. In fact, they market that in the following years registration window with statements like, “this event WILL sell out.’
I play in several other events put on by Play Golf Myrtle Beach that are field limited. And for the past year or so, there has been an overall decline in participation and several times the events have not “sold out.” I’d venture to guess that golfers don’t see the value anymore and therefore choose not to play. I, however, do still see the value and thoroughly enjoy the competition and camaraderie and so I choose to play.
Looking back over the past 5 years (excluding COVID year) the overall number of players has been slightly over 3000 each year. My guess is that this year would not have been any different without the limited field of 3000, possibly even fewer based on the participation decline of other events in Myrtle Beach.
Just my $.02
May 16, 2025 at 10:03 am #53506John TantilloParticipantI think the limit is simply a matter of practicality in terms of event planning. With a hard limit they have a much better idea how many courses to book and how much food and beverage is needed. I’m sure it would not be easy trying to line up more courses as late as June or July if the participation number kept increasing.
May 20, 2025 at 10:00 am #53514Billy BurwickParticipantThe hard limit does 2 things. I puts some pressure on people to sign up and it gives them a fixed # that they can give to vendors. My first year we hit 3100+ the last 2 have been right around the 3k mark.
96 Days to go!!!
May 21, 2025 at 12:01 pm #53522Terry CorneliusParticipantI think w will struggle to hit 3,000 this year. Does anyone know how many Canadians play in an average year? We have around 20 so far.
July 2, 2025 at 9:45 am #53594dan westenbargerParticipantI doubt very much that they will turn down any one even if the number should go to 3500.Why would they every player is money. Most people probably know this but back when DuPont was the title sponsor and they gave away a car each year we had over 5000 players.i think they should add $10 to the entry fee and use that money to buy a car to give away or find a sponsor to donate one .This would probably drive up the participation, don’t think it will ever be 5000 again but a 10-20 percent increase would be nice especially if it brings in younger players.Really need the younger guys to keep this tournament going this will be my 29 year and the field keeps getting older.Just my thoughts.
July 11, 2025 at 10:33 pm #53623Geoff KorenParticipantWell, we’re getting closer, and it looks like the WA may not get to the 3,000 player limit. I have been around long enough to remember the days when we had over 5,000 players. I have a couple suggestions that may explain the lower turnout and what might generate more interest in the future.
1. The price tag. While I believe it is still a good deal for yourself and a guest, with the unlimited food and drink, not everyone brings a guest. Maybe make the guest pass an add on and drop the price for individual players. It definitely seems in the last few years we have gotten less for more.
2. The prizes: Gone I guess are the days of a condo giveaway but also the flight prizes are a little low. The $600 limit for amateurs was changed years ago to $1000. If this is truly the best tournament on the planet(which I still believe it is) the prizes should be commensurate.
3. Re-do a survey to see who wants Tee-times vs. shotgun. I myself prefer shotgun because of the camaraderie, the ease of skin games and the consistency. Back when I was younger and crazy I would often play an afternoon emergency 18 which would be impossible with a late tee time. It may actually be hurting the Myrtle Beach golf economy by going to tee times.
4. Pair the leaders on Thursday. Just a select few make the finals, but the tension of being in contention on Thursday make it exciting for 7 more players in each flight.
5. More Advertising to younger and female golfers. It seems the average age gets older every year and we need to bring in more players from those two groups.
Thats it. Post any other thoughts.
July 11, 2025 at 11:39 pm #53624Rick KimbrellParticipantGeoff, I like all your suggestions.
July 12, 2025 at 6:19 am #53626Bob NewmanParticipantYou can re-do the survey, but as long as the courses want tee times, that’s what it will remain. I personally prefer tee times. It is advertised as a tournament and that is what tournaments play is. Prize money should definitely go up; although I haven’t collected any lately. Paring on last day could actually happen if the hosting club would actually “step up” and do something other than sit back and just take in the money. I remember the days when they had rovers monitoring pace of play.
July 12, 2025 at 4:26 pm #53629Heidi GallaherParticipantAgree with the prizes. Gender specific prizes aren’t thought out. Giving belts away to women for long drive is wacky. I don’t know a single woman (under 50) who wears a belt. LOL
July 15, 2025 at 10:07 am #53634Billy BurwickParticipantGeoff all great suggestions,
I think they will get really close to the cap. Last year it was just under and with everything going on in the world it’s not surprising that International players are probably down.
There have been a couple of Canadians here complaining about the Trump Tariff’s which is silly because letting Politics trickle into a Golf Tournament is Non Sense.
Tee times are here to stay. This is what the courses want. Is this a deal breaker for me, Nope.
Pairing the Leaders on the final day is a No brainer and really not that hard but might mess up people that need to have tee times near each other. But still a great idea.
I would love to see The WAM staff go after a female golfer also. I can only Imagine what Paige Spiranacs fee would be but if you want to bring in New golfers Someone like Paige would do it.
The Prizes are what they are. There are other tourneys to play if you want to play for more cash.
I just want to add that in 4 years, Never even sniffed any of the early entry prizes while some win them every year. As my kids would say, SUS
